When I adopted two children from Nicaragua as a single mother, I knew it would be both challenging and rewarding to be a mother.  But I have a solid career and make a good, middle class income.  That’s why what I did was as much a surprise to me and my friends and family. 

My shocking act?  I borrowed money by using my car title as collateral.  And under similar circumstances in the future, I would do it again.

It began when my daughter was in a car accident.  She required hospitalization at Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, four operations, several months of physical therapy and to manage pain and infection, a cocktail of medications. She just celebrated her fourth birthday last week.

I had to hire a specialized babysitter so I could continue working, which cost even more money.
